Notes re Newfoundland FURLONGS
from R.C. Basilica Books at NF Provincial Archives1
Bill Dawson discovered most of these St. John's NF Furlongs by personally looking them up in the 1archives. Sources for the data follow the list. Both Bill and I make no warrantee as to the correctness of this information. He hand wro te his interpretation of almost readable writing on microfiche of old church records, then he typed the information up and sent it to me.  Bill has been very careful to type the names the same way as listed, however, a typo could have made. I massaged and formatted the data and added to the information then placed it on this page. Thus, the probability of errors are high.  Ho wever, they are an excellent value as leads.  If you believe that any of these families/people are your ancestors, send away for certified copies! If you do get more information, please share it with others by emailing it to me.

Historical tidbits affecting St. John's immigrants:

Having more than one child with the same name occurs because if a child died, another baby was often given that name. It's also likely that a lot of the Furlongs with one or two children moved on to Canada or the USA. Bill Dawson

It seems that it was very common for "runners" to "smuggle" families from both NF and Nova Scotia, to the Boston area where there are a "ton" of FURLONGs. Paul Furlong

St. John's was totally devastated by fire in 1892, which left most of the business section in ruins and over 12,000 people homeless. The business sector suffered severe financial loss, leading to the closing of the two major banks. lQQk here

Been Searched:

LDS Family Search CD:  No nearly relevant [to my Thos J] FURLONG found.

LDS Microfiche:  No nearly relevant [to my Thos J] FURLONG found.

LDS Social Security:  Found no nearly relevant information on Thomas J. FURLONG

Canada 411: Listed a total of 166 FURLONGs currently in Newfoundland, 90 of which are listed as St. John's.

Ultimate Family Tree: As a 'member' I found no nearly relevant FURLONGs [to my Thos J]

A microfiche [Now really, you didn't expect me to write down the reference # of a LDS microfiche?] covering the Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society indicated a Chris FURLONG was a member. His address was 36 Shaw St., St. Johns NF A1E 2W8. The Society told me that its been a few years since he was active. Perhaps someone local in St John's could look him up? I can't find an e-mail address for him on the web. I bet he could tell us plenty!

Memorial University of Newfoundland Libraries has in their QEII collection Micro Fiche CIHM 42575: Historical sketches of O'Connell ... [and] Thomas Furlong, ... with a glance at the future destiny of Ireland by McGee, Thomas D'Arcy, 1825-1868. Also their PAB KEYWORD collection lists journal articles re FURLONG in the NF area. This didn't allow me to see the actual articles. Someone with access to the Univ. in St. Johns would have to do it.

Infospace White Pages lists several FURLONGs in NF.

Genserve has listing of 172 FURLONGS but you must be a member [submit GEDCOM file and something about $1 per month. Anyone a member? If so, can you get these addresses or files or whatever? If you send them to me, I'll sort through them and post summary.

Family Tree Maker has plenty of FURLONGS on their IGF, regular and World CDs but when I looked those people up in the database, there were no details [ie date or place of birth] for those who were not labeled private. The private listing means that person is still alive and the info is confidential.
